In the event of a disaster, it is important to follow certain steps, be it when the loss occurs or during the compensation process.
Secure the premises and limit damage
If it is water damage, cut off the main water supply and electricity in all rooms affected by the damage.
- Take pictures or videos of the situation and objects if possible.
- Remove as much water as possible.
- Place objects that are not damaged in a place that has not been affected by the disaster.
If it is a theft, you will certainly have to secure the premises by repairing a window, a door or changing locks.
If it is a fire, you will have to wait for permission from the competent authorities (police, firefighters) to return.
Secure the premises as needed (eg, cut off electricity to prevent damage from getting worse), without putting your life at risk.
Contact your insurer's claims department
If emergency work is needed, a claims adjuster will be assigned to you at this stage and will suggest a disaster recovery company or a construction contractor. These are often companies that have contracts with the insurance company. You can choose the company of your choice, as long as it meets the criteria of the insurer. For example, a construction contractor must have a license from the Régie du bâtiment.
Estimate the damage
The claims adjuster of your insurer will tell you which documents you must send to them so that they can assess the damages following the incident. In most cases, you will need to provide an inventory of the property and photos of the damaged items.
To be authorized by the claims adjuster
If any work is required following the incident, the contractor will send an estimate to your claims adjuster with photos of the damage. The work can then begin. Attention, it is not recommended to have a repair done without having spoken to your claims adjuster. Otherwise, you may not be reimbursed by your insurer.
Analysis and settlement of your claim by your insurer
Your claims adjuster will then proceed to the analysis of your claim. After receiving the requested documents and information, they will contact you to agree on a payment according to the terms and conditions set out in your insurance contract.
